S3E39: Cindra Kamphoff, Mentally Strong for Life

Grit is just one of the many pieces of the success puzzle. But although it’s one of many, it’s a great starting place for thinking about what it truly takes to be on top of your game or field as an athlete or entrepreneur. That’s one of the key messages from this week’s guest, author and sports psychologist Dr. Cindra Kamphoff.

She traces her current path back to when she ran the Boston Marathon in 2013 — the year of the bombing. In that moment, Kamphoff said she realized what mattered most to her, what she wanted to accomplish in the near future, and above all, why she was doing what she was doing with her life. After all, it’s often the most challenging moments that change us the most. If we overcome them and keep persevering, we develop grit and the long-term passion it takes to succeed.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to use outcome-driven goals to stay focused
  • How to use process-driven goals to improve daily
  • Develop grit through overcoming difficult moments
  • Cultivate passion for something in the long-term
  • Support mental toughness and resilience in kids through conversation

“I’ve found particularly while you’re competing, if you’re thinking about the outcome, it’s really detrimental to performance.” -Dr. Cindra Kamphoff

“I think you come to understand yourself and what your grit is really like, and you become more in tune with that, in the more difficult moments in your life.” -Dr. Cindra Kamphoff

“I think getting clear on the reason and the purpose you’re doing what you’re doing is really important.” -Dr. Cindra Kamphoff

“If we tie our identity to winning, it’s something that’s uncontrollable. So, it’s important that we think of our performance more related to the process and how we want to play instead of did we win or did we lose.” -Dr. Cindra Kamphoff

“Your purpose is more impactful when you’re not doing it just for you, but you’re doing it to serve others.” -Dr. Cindra Kamphoff
