Episode 72: Kurt Traylor, Pounding the Stone

Kurt Traylor

It’s not about how much you win, it’s about the effort you put in to compete and the lessons you take away from trying. This week, we hear from Tyler Lee head football coach Kurt Traylor, who shares tips on how to successfully coach the next generation to succeed in sports and in life.

Over years as a coach, he’s developed some ideas to live by. The first is pound the stone, or #PTS. You have to show up every day, work hard, and chip away at your goals bit by bit, no matter how long it takes. The second is to follow a PRIDE mentality, which stands for positivity, respect, integrity, discipline, and “every day and every play of your life.” There are no perfect executions and no perfect plays, but there is perfect effort, which builds the strength—both mental and physical—that it takes to lead a good and fulfilling life.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Practice competition in every aspect of your life
  • Cultivate a right mindset for yourself and your team
  • Strive for perfect effort, rather than perfect execution
  • Start your day with positive thinking
  • Adapt your skills to new situations

“I always say, if you can get to a kid’s heart, you can get to their head.” -Kurt Traylor

It’s unbelievable what kids will do for you if you just love them and show them some attention. That’s all they want.” -Kurt Traylor

Every day, you show up and put in work. Every day, you take a sledgehammer and you’re just pounding the rock. Every day, you never know which blow it’s going to be. It could be the one thousandth. It could be the millionth where you’re finally getting little chips. You’re finally getting a little success.” -Kurt Traylor

It takes zero talent to play or do anything with effort.” -Kurt Traylor

“You have to adapt as a coach. There’s no way you can still go with the mentality of 1995. There’s no way as a coach you can do that. If you’re not changing, you’re going to get left behind.” -Kurt Traylor
