In order to reach your full potential, it’s important to practice habits, make choices, and surround yourself with people who will help you get there. In this week’s episode of the Compete Every Day podcast, host Jake Thompson talks about how to make life changes to get you where you need to go. He shares stories from his own past about times he didn’t make the right choices and how he learned to make those crucial shifts with the support of a good friend.
Jim Rohn said we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. That’s why it’s so critical to make sure our inner circle, or our starting five, are people who are impacting our lives in positive and forward-thinking ways. Jake says there are three things we need to look for as we establish that group: people who challenge us, people who encourage us, and people who constantly remind us of who we say we want to be and what we’re truly capable of.
What You’ll Learn:
- Surround yourself with people who bring you up, not drag you down
- How to choose teammates for life
- Make decisions that reflect your goals
- Change habits to push you in the right direction
- Seek honesty in relationships
“In sports you don’t get to choose your teammates. In life you do.” -Jake Thompson
“The relationships where one person is growing and one person is not eventually are going to hit a breaking point or the person that’s growing is suddenly going to stop.” -Jake Thompson
“The worst thing you want to have happen is when you look around your social circle of five or three or two and realize you’re at the top, that you are the highest one in there, you’re the most achieving, the most successful, the strongest, the smartest, the one that’s always committed to growing. If you look around and see that in your social circle, you’ve got to wake up.” -Jake Thompson
“The type of people you need to be investing your life with, investing your time and your energy in are the ones that are going to sharpen you.” -Jake Thompson
“Each choice you make in the right direction puts you closer to who you say you want to become.” -Jake Thompson
This week, Jake mentioned motivational speaker Jim Rohn, who said that each of us is the average of the five people we spend the most time with.
