If there’s one thing Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman is no stranger to, it’s transitions. He’s been a wrestler, a professional UFC fighter, and a Spanish teacher and is now a published author, motivational speaker, and podcaster. Throughout his life, he’s found ways of putting his strengths to good use across many platforms, enabling him to transition from one path to another while carrying his best characteristics with him the whole way.
This week, Brenneman shares tips on becoming a tough and diligent lifelong learner. It’s about maintaining curiosity and having the perseverance to seek out new information. Brenneman’s view is that learning gets you what you want. With so much information available these days, it’s possible to gain new skills and knowledge very quickly. If you want to do something, Brenneman says, go out and find a way to do it. The world is full of opportunities; it’s up to you to take advantage of them.
What You’ll Learn:
- Listen when people you trust and respect challenge your ideas
- Recognize your strengths and build upon them
- Find ways to utilize your skill sets across platforms
- Question your preconceived notions
- Work to build self-awareness
“Why I preach this message of learning and toughness is, it went off in my head, wait a minute, the only thing between me, this guy who doesn’t know, and me, the handyman, is Youtube videos and doing. Learning will get you what you want. If you want to be a handyman, be a handyman.” -Charlie Brenneman
“I’ve had a hundred terrible heartbreaks and then you get up and you do it again. It never gets easy.” -Charlie Brenneman
“I now look outside and it’s like, this is one big adventure. … Life is literally an adventure.” -Charlie Brenneman
“There’s all these opportunities, and it goes back to that learning mindset or that growth mindset that there is so much out there.” -Charlie Brenneman
“Rather than saying I’m a wrestler (or) I’m a fighter, what I do is look in the mirror and say, OK, I’m a person who works really hard. I’m a diligent student. I won’t quit. I’ll keep going. I take care of my mind. I take care of my body. That’s who I am.” -Charlie Brenneman
